CPS607 Autonomous Mobile Systems

Examples from Fall 2002

Lab 1: Stay on a flat surface without falling off. Students must work individually and cannot use any form of digital computation or Robot kits.

Lab 2: Students, working in groups, must create a robot able to stay on a surface similar to Lab 1 and to avoid collisions with objects on the surface.


Lab 3: The groups must create a robot able to complete Lab 1 and 2 and follow a white line on a dark surface in a lit room.


Final Exercise:
Groups create robots to traverse a short maze, find a candle and extinguish it.



CPS841 Human-Robot Interaction

From the first time humanity picked up a stick and attempted to knock down some food from an unreachable branch we have attempted to use technology to extend our influence on the world. This course examines physical systems designed to extend the notion of human presence to remote locations. Topics include Presence, Telepresence, Telerobotics and Agency. The course is designed to provide students with a practical introduction that will involve the design and construction of working interactive systems designed to interact with remote environments.

In the winter term of 2006 labs consisted of dealing with handicapped access facilities, automatic doors, ramps, obstacles, and elevator buttons. The final exercise involved a simulated USAR environment consisting literally of a black box. Each team had 15 minutes to get to the “disaster” site, set up their robot and other equipment and find and provide a map to 5 simulated casualties in the box.

After the final exercise the student in the course were invited to recreate the exercise at the Ontario Science Centre.
